Currents in the Surf Zone

The surf tends to pile up water on the beach. Gravity tends to level the sea surface. The result is currents in the surf zone due to waves that is separate from the general ocean current outside the surf zone, driven by the winds and tides.

These predictions are generalized, or averages over the area described. They do not predict rip currents, for example.

This predictions are useful in studying the transport of sand along the beach, and between the beach and offshore bars.
